Project Athena Foundation
Empowering survivors through the motivation of adventure!
The Project Athena Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering survivors of traumatic events through adventurous activities. Heavily emphasized through team building, Project Athena events offer survivors unique opportunities to bond with individuals who’ve also been through tremendous ordeals. For several years, Grace Marhic has fundraised for and participated in Project Athena multisport events that meld together her favorite sports: kayaking, cycling, running and hiking. By far, her favorite element of these events is the team building aspect. In Marhic’s experience, the process of empowering a Survivor into an Athlete is truly motivational and inspirational! She loves the opportunity Project Athena gives her to connect with fellow survivors in a supportive and non-competitive environment. True to its motto, the initiative is very much about assisted survivors in the process of overcoming trauma through the support of teamwork.
The Project Athena Foundation was founded by Robyn Benincasa in 2014. Benincasa is a dynamic survivor turned athlete who embraces her two bionic hips, viewing these features as motivation rather than avolition. As she states in her own words, the Project Athena Foundation is about showing survivors that it’s not about the setback — it’s about the comeback! Grace Marhic certainly feels empowered by that sentiment and continues to embody its power in her Project Athena participation!
