Dilan Ellegala is a neurosurgeon based in Phoenix Arizona making a global impact. Founder of NGO Madaktari Africa, his efforts in global medical education have earned him international respect in the medical community.
In the United States, he stands as Surgeon-in-Chief of Sonospine, which has been revered for its innovative and revolutionary surgical procedure known as Sonospine Sonosculpt.
Global Medical Education
When Dr. Dilantha B. Ellegala MD visited Haydom, Tanzania, he discovered something quite unsettling. A community rampant with disease, the greatest disadvantage of Tanzanians seemed so simple and yet so frustrating: dependence. All of Dr. Ellegala’s fellow physicians were Westerners, visiting to complete their work and then return home. The neurosurgeon saw this dynamic to be something of a temporary fix. In no way was the culture of this practice sustainable. Realizing this prompted Dr. Ellegala to put an idea into play that would reshape Tanzania’s future in medicine.
In 2007, Dilan Ellegala founded Madaktari Africa, a non-profit, non-governmental organization. Through this organization, physicians educated in the Western world travel to Africa in order to teach local personnel how to perform life-changing surgeries. This action has proven much more effective than previous methods. Armed with vital knowledge, African physicians are now able to facilitate healthcare on a completely new level. It all started with Dr. Dilantha B. Ellegala’s experimental leap of teaching a non-doctor how to perform neurosurgery. That decision created an unbelievable ripple effect which continues to save lives to this day. His work solidifies the concept that knowledge is power.
The story of Dr. Dilantha B. Ellegala MD’s revolutionary work in Africa is documented in Tony Bartelme’s A Surgeon in the Village: An American Doctor Teaches Brain Surgery in Africa (2017).
Sonospine Sonosculpt
At home, Dr. Dilantha B. Ellegala MD’s dedication to innovation and pioneerism is evident. His Sonospine practice, which has locations in both Washington, DC and Scottsdale, AZ, offers patients an alternative to more invasive and disruptive spinal surgeries. The revolutionary surgical procedure is known as Sonospine Sonosculpt.
Sonospine Sonosculpt is more precise and accurate than similar surgeries. Relying on an ultrasonic tool, physicians at Sonospine remove bone and disc from a patient’s spine. This is achieved through high frequency vibration. Dilan Ellegala developed this technique in an effort to provide patients with a procedure that provides symptom relief with less complications than the average spinal surgery. Additionally, this minimally invasive procedure helps patients avoid complex spinal fusion surgery, allowing for faster recovery times.
Sonospine Sonosculpt is able to treat herniated discs, bone spurs, degenerative disc disease, failed back surgery syndrome, foraminal stenosis and spinal stenosis.
